Description

Open House Saturday at Taylor Observatory: “Ask An Astronomer”

Have you ever wondered why eclipses don’t occur every month, or why some stars twinkle and others don’t?  Will the moon ever fall to earth?  Has an earthling ever been hit by a falling meteor?  Lake County residents are invited to bring these and other astronomy questions to Taylor Observatory in Kelseyville on Saturday night for an informal and free evening with Taylor amateur astronomers.  Maybe you’re considering a purchase of a telescope or binoculars; advice will be available.  Friends of Taylor Board member Tom Schlief will discuss his recently purchased Dobsonian telescope, and Bill Haddon may give a short talk on purchasing binoculars for night sky viewing.  Solar system expert Eduardo Alatorre will be there to answer solar system and space probe questions.

Taylor will open at 6:30 for this special event.  Planetarium shows will be featured, and weather permitting, we’ll have good views of Jupiter, and various deep space objects through Taylor telescopes.  Earth’s moon is cooperating by delaying its rise until well after the Taylor event, so skies will be dark.  Jupiter’s moons Ganymede and Europa will be close to an eclipse mid-evening.

Friends of Taylor Observatory-Norton Planetarium sponsors the program.  Admission is free this month; donations are always appreciated.  Taylor is located at the end of Oak Hills Lane in Kelseyville.  For further information phone 415 209-3084, or visit the Friends of Taylor Facebook page.
