Arthur Penn directed this tense and riveting 1962 film version of William Gibson’s play about Helen Keller (Patty Duke), a blind and deaf adolescent whose increasingly wild, angry behavior causes her desperate parents to hire teacher Anne Sullivan (Anne Bancroft) whose methods are forceful and unusual.
