The 1944 macabre farce, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” starring Cary Grant, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, May 23, at 1:00 and 6:00 pm. Entry to the film is by donation. One of the most beloved and popular comedies from Hollywood’s Golden Era, this frenzied, madcap romp from celebrated director Frank Capra features a pair of sweet, well meaning, yet murderous aunts who serve up elderberry wine spiked with arsenic to elderly gentlemen and then bury them in the basement. Grant, as the nephew who discovers his aunts’ secret, does a marvelous job of exaggerated acting with constant mugging, double-takes, slapstick, and general befuddlement.
